In addition to the tips in the video – Here’s the We Do Fruition current Top 25 tips for Search Engine Optimisation:

  1. There’s no time like the present. The longer you leave it to start your SEO, the further ahead the competition will be, and the harder it might become to rank higher than them.
  2. Find out about your competitors. Even before you start SEO, it’s very wise to understand who your competitors are. Get online and find out what sites are ranked on the first page for the keywords that you want to rank for.
  3. Don’t spend a lot of money on your SEO. You can get big results on a small budget just by creating good content and building online relationships plus putting some of these other tips into practice.
  4. Don’t expect things to happen overnight. The results of your SEO work might not come to ‘fruition’ instantly and might not be recognised by the main search engines, for weeks, or even months. The newer your website is, the more patient you will need to be. Like anything in business, it usually takes time to build recognition and trust, and until you’ve worked hard to develop both, you shouldn’t expect to outrank older, more established websites.
  5. Owning a website is like painting the Forth Road Bridge – you should never consider it to be finished. If you want your site to continue to rank higher, attract and engage more visitors, then you should always be adding to and improving it.
  6. Get the lowdown from the technical SEO gurus. To retain good SEO rankings you need to adapt your activity as search engines adapt the way they work.
  7. Bookmark the Google Webmaster site and visit it regularly. They have some simple guidelines and help videos.
  8. Use Google Analytics. To find out how many visitors your site gets, the keywords they use to find it, and what pages they visit.
  9. Set-up a Google+ page for your business and any other social media channels that are part of your business strategy. Doing so builds the potential for driving traffic to your website, if done as part of a well thought out social media strategy.
  10. Use Pay Per Click in addition to SEO. If you can afford to do both, then do both, as although PPC can be costly, you can get visitors to your site straight away for any keywords that you want.
  11. Link only with other high quality businesses. Low quality backlinks and/or low quality on-site content, that isn’t relevant to your audience can easily result in your site being penalised by search engines.
  12. Create great content primarily for your customers, not search engines. There’s no point creating content that ranks well if it doesn’t help people, interest them, or persuade them to come back and visit you time after time.
  13. Don’t duplicate content. You can be penalised for having the same, or very similar, content on multiple pages of your site.
  14. Claim authorship of your content. Linking your social media accounts to your content improves both rankings and potential click-through-rate by customers.
  15. Become an authority in your chosen field and ensure that your content is good enough to be on the first page. If your content isn’t better than that of your competitors for a particular keyword then your site don’t deserve to rank there.
  16. Make your content attractive and engaging for visitors. The more engaging it is, the longer people will stay on your site, and high dwell times might signal to search engines that your site deserves good rankings.
  17. Create short and snappy video content. People love video and if done well the time that people spend on your site will increase and also allow you to drive traffic from YouTube and other video hosting websites. If you are hosting your video on the likes of YouTube, remember to tag them with the correct “tags” so they show up when people are searching a specific subject or topic.
  18. Create great visuals that are arresting and capture people’s attention. Customers are more likely to share and link to these types of content than too much plain written content.
  19. More quality content equals more rankings in the long term, more visitors and more potential sales. Customers trust more sites that are crammed with lots of pages of good quality content.
  20. Add simple blog functionality to your website. This makes it quick and easy for you to add new pages of content to your site.
  21. Write a unique, descriptive title for every page. Within 55 characters make sure you clearly describe the content of a page, so it is clear to both customers and search engines.
  22. Write a unique, descriptive meta description for every page. Within 160 characters make sure you describe the topic of a page in a way that engages and attracts people to click on your site instead of the other sites listed above or below in the search results.
  23. Use Google’s Keyword Tool. You simply enter keyword ideas that you want and it provides a good list of words and phrases related to them.
  24. Get ideas from your customers. Your customers see your business differently to you and may think of different words and phrases to describe what you do.
  25. Target relevant keywords. The more relevant your keywords are, the easier and quicker it is to rank them and the higher the percentage of visitors who will become buyers.
